The Jean Kent Trust was established in 2019 following the passing of long serving volunteer, Elizabeth Jeanette Kent (Jean).

Jean was a valuable member of the team at BayCISS following the amalgamation of the former three agencies, Sandringham, Brighton and Hampton East.

Her love for her community was extremely evident in all that she did – her enthusiasm and commitment expressed through her volunteer work with the Sandringham centre and later here at Hampton East.

We will all have very fond memories of Jean – her endless stories, her wicked sense of humour, her common sense, her dogged determined nature and her ability to see the positive in everything.

Jean was nominated in 2018 for Victorian Senior of the Year and although she wasn’t named the winner, she was certainly a winner to us and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

During the course of gathering information for the nomination, we learnt a lot about her…

Jean volunteered with this organisation for 26 years, commencing back in 1992 after relocating to the area.  Originally from England, she migrated to Australian (ten pound pom) and settled in Sydney with her family.  As a volunteer with the Sandringham agency, she would assist with information about the general area, services, community agencies and other information, including tourist stuff, as required.  With the amalgamation in 2006, Jean came to work at this site and remained with us for her one shift every week (except holidays of course) until her illness took hold last year.  Jean has always been a positive and advocate for her local community and was an active member of the Sandringham Croquet Club, Sandringham Historical Society, the Shakespeare Society and a very passionate member of the Richard III society (you can look that one up).

Prior to relocating to Melbourne, Jean was heavily involved with Meals on Wheels and Riding for the Disabled, as well as Friends of Laleia – a special local Bayside group providing support to the small community in East Timor.

Jean worked tirelessly for the community and her family.  She displayed empathy, flexibility, tolerance, patience, understanding and acceptance.  She was kind and charitable with her time and nature.  She was an absolute pleasure to work with and an outstanding member of the community.  She was also someone we called ‘friend’.
